Our Story

It started with a name.

Every pet owner knows the moment — the one where you first say their name out loud and it feels real. That name carries everything: the day you brought them home, the first walk, the look they give you when you've been gone too long. We started Tailmark because we believe a name that meaningful deserves more than a mass-produced tag from a big-box store.

Made by hand, one name at a time.

Tailmark is a small workshop in Ontario, Canada. Every collar is cut, beveled, burnished, dyed, and finished by hand using vegetable-tanned leather — the same kind that gets more beautiful with age, developing a rich patina that tells the story of your adventures together. Every ID tag is laser-engraved into solid brass or stainless steel, creating a permanent mark that won't fade, peel, or wear off.

We don't operate a factory. We don't mass-produce. When you order from Tailmark, a real person reads your pet's name, sets it into the laser, and watches it come to life on leather and metal. That's not a marketing line — it's Tuesday.

Why vegetable-tanned leather?

Most pet collars use chrome-tanned leather — it's cheaper, faster to produce, and involves harsh chemicals. We chose vegetable-tanned leather because it's better in every way that matters: it's tanned using natural tree bark extracts instead of chemicals, it's stronger and more durable, and it ages beautifully instead of cracking and peeling. It costs more. It takes longer. It's worth it.

Our hardware is solid brass — not plated, not coated, not hollow. The kind that develops a warm patina over time and lasts for years of daily wear.

Why personalization matters.

A collar with your pet's name engraved into the leather isn't just an accessory — it's a statement. It says: this is not just any dog. This is my dog. This is the one who changed my life.

That's why we named our company Tailmark. A mark for the one who wags their tail when you walk through the door.

Every name tells a story. We're here to make it permanent.
